ISLAMABAD (AP) — Thousands of supporters of a radical Pakistani political party gathered near the capital Islamabad on Saturday to condemn Israeli attacks in Gaza and urge the government to send more aid to the Palestinians.
The protesters also demanded that Pakistan declare Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu “a terrorist.” There was no immediate government response after the meeting in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.
Pakistan has no diplomatic relations with Israel. Pakistan has called for a ceasefire in the nine-month war between Israel and Hamas and has sent aid to Palestinians in Gaza in recent months.
Saad Rizvi, leader of the Islamist Tehreek-e-Labiak Pakistan party, which led the demonstration, said the sit-in at the protest would continue until the demands were accepted by the government.
Hundreds of police officers attended the rally, which came amid mounting militant attacks in Pakistan.
