Germany is bracing for more heavy rain on Thursday, a day after storms caused flooding and emergency aid in several parts of Germany.
In the southwestern town of Rastatt, 90 kilometers (56 miles) west of Stuttgart, storms and heavy rainfall prompted about 100 emergency services to respond as cellars and tunnels filled with water, police said.
No injuries were reported, but significant material damage is expected.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall caused water to seep into the shelves of the Berlin Central and Regional Library (ZLB). An Instagram post from the library showed staff carrying buckets of water out of the building.
“There are hundreds of thousands of books here, some of which are old and in immediate danger,” ZLB director Jonas Fansa told broadcaster RBB.
According to RBB, a rainwater pipe in the library had burst.
In the German state of Hesse, heavy storms and flooding prompted several police operations and emergency services had to remove five fallen trees from two highways.
In the eastern state of Saxony, a train collided with two fallen trees but did not derail. The trees had to be removed from the tracks.
In the southern state of Bavaria, streets and cellars were flooded and trees fell, a spokesman for the fire brigade in Rosenheim reported.
According to the German Meteorological Service (DWD), rain and thunderstorms are expected again on Thursday, mainly in eastern and southern Germany, but also in some central parts of the country.
