Eight Israeli soldiers have been killed during fighting with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Another seven soldiers were injured, some seriously, the army said, citing two separate battles. The army had initially killed only one soldier.

The Hezbollah militia claimed to have destroyed three Israeli main battle tanks advancing towards the Lebanese town of Maroun al-Ras.

There was initially no confirmation of this from Israel.

Both parties’ claims could not be independently verified.
