Tesla has reported a rise in quarterly production and sales, helped by higher orders in China and an increase in production at its Shanghai factory.
Although some media reports suggested these fell short of analyst expectations, Tesla’s third-quarter production totaled 469,796 units – up from 411,000 in the second quarter. Deliveries amounted to 462,890 units – compared to 444,000 in the second quarter. The increases followed two consecutive quarters of declines.
Analysts note that Tesla has faced stiffer competition this year in China – which accounts for about a third of global sales – from BYD and other domestic manufacturers with cheaper BEVs. The company introduced a series of promotions this spring to boost sales in China.
The Chinese government also increased incentives for BEVs in China earlier this year.
