Video of Brazil flooding wrongly shared as ‘flooded city in northern Myanmar’

The same video was shared with a similar false claim about floods in Myanmar on Facebook here And here.

The images show flooding in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre.

A keyword search using the watermark from the video returned the same images published here on May 6, 2024 by a TikTok user named Uesley Moreira (archived link).

The Portuguese caption of the TikTok video can be translated into English as: “third day of missions in Porto Alegre #ajudeors #riograndedosul.”

Porto Alegre is the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil.

At least 170 people have died and more than 600,000 have been displaced. severe flooding in Rio Grande do Sul, which experts say is due to climate change exacerbated by El Niño (archived link).

Moreira told AFP he made the video on May 6, 2024, when he traveled to Porto Alegre during the floods.

“I traveled to Rio Grande do Sul, where the video was shot sometime in May 2024.”

Using visual cues and information from the TikTok video’s subtitles, AFP geolocated the clip to Porto Alegre on Google Maps.
