Air France-KLM has signed an agreement with French multinational TotalEnergies to supply up to 1.5 million tonnes of more sustainable aviation fuel, partly aimed at reducing carbon emissions from European aviation.
The agreement will accelerate Europe’s decarbonisation process and go beyond legal obligations over a 10-year period until 2035, the airline said on Monday.
It is one of the largest contracts for the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel that Air France-KLM has concluded to date.
Earlier in 2022, the companies signed a letter of intent for the supply of 800,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel.
Air France-KLM aims to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger/km by 30% by 2030 compared to 2019. The company will achieve this through a combination of fleet renewal, operational measures such as eco-piloting and the use of at least 10% more sustainable aviation fuel on all its flights.
According to Air France-KLM, sustainable aviation fuel reduces CO2 emissions by at least 75% and up to 90% over the entire life cycle of the fuel, compared to fossil fuel equivalents.
