European Union countries agreed on Monday to provide more than €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in emergency aid to five member states hit by major flooding in 2023.

The money from the EU Solidarity Fund goes to Italy, Slovenia, Greece, France and Austria.

The largest share, almost €450 million and €430 million respectively, is expected for Italy and Slovenia, where extremely intense rainfall caused major damage last year.

The announcement comes days after floods in recent days caused widespread devastation across central and eastern Europe, from Romania to Poland. The European Commission has pledged €10 billion in additional emergency aid.
