India and Brazil have unveiled plans in a joint statement to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector, with a focus on biofuels and SAF.

The collaboration aims to share regulatory and policy experiences to stimulate investments in SAF production.

The partnership was highlighted during the official visit of India’s Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Puri, to Brazil from September 19 to 21, at the invitation of Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira.

Puri, along with representatives of Indian oil and gas companies, discussed ongoing cooperation in the energy sector with Brazilian colleagues.

These include Indian upstream investments, a mutually beneficial trade relationship and cooperation in sustainable fuels, especially biofuels.

According to the announcement, India has made significant investments in Brazil’s oil and gas sector, making it one of the largest destinations for Indian oil and gas companies globally.

The two countries aim to increase the presence of Indian companies in Brazil, including by exploring new investment opportunities in production assets.

They are also looking for mechanisms to improve bilateral trade.

As founding members of the Global Biofuels Alliance, India and Brazil see the role of the alliance in promoting biofuels as a vital part of the global energy transition, contributing to environmental sustainability and socio-economic growth.

The collaboration includes deep and ultra-deep explorations in the Indian offshore areas.

India and Brazil, both major producers of biofuels, are poised to collaborate on the production and use of SAF.

They plan to leverage their existing ethanol and biodiesel production infrastructure, the growing aviation market and the vast potential of feedstocks, including agricultural commodities.

The discussion revealed that SAF is currently the most mature and viable option for decarbonising the aviation sector, but it represents only 0.3% of current aviation fuel consumption.

Earlier this month, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company announced has signed an LNG supply agreement with IndianOil.
