Iraq’s most influential Shiite cleric, Ali al-Sistani, called on Monday for an end to Israel’s “brutal” attacks on Lebanon and for protection of the Lebanese people.
In a rare political statement, al-Sistani called for “all possible efforts to stop this ongoing barbaric aggression.”
He also urged believers to contribute to alleviating the suffering (of the Lebanese people) and ensuring their humanitarian needs.
The 94-year-old cleric expressed his solidarity with the Lebanese people, who are “increasingly facing brutal Israeli aggression”, including the recent coordinated explosions using walkie-talkies and pagers and attacks on villages in the south.
In August, al-Sistani also called for an end to the “genocidal war” in Gaza.
