Gingerbread production in Germany fell slightly last year, according to government figures published on Wednesday.
At 86,800 tonnes, the volume of gingerbread produced in Germany was around 1% lower than the previous year, the German Federal Statistical Office reported.
About a quarter of the gingerbread, 22,500 tons, was exported. The biggest buyers were Austria, Poland and France, the report shows.
Most of the exports of the cookies, which are traditionally eaten around Christmas, were shipped abroad in August and September.
German gingerbread manufacturers typically increase production in the summer so that the treats are ready in time for Christmas and can be exported well before the holidays.
According to the agency, approximately 10,800 tons of gingerbread were imported into Germany in 2023.
