MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — One person was taken to the hospital Wednesday after a United Airlines flight was diverted to Memphis due to severe turbulence, officials said.

The person was in non-critical condition when he was taken to the hospital after the plane from Cancun, Mexico, to Chicago landed at Memphis International Airport, United and the Memphis Fire Department said in separate statements.

According to United, the turbulence occurred while the seat belt light was on.

According to the Memphis Fire Department, six other people refused treatment and transportation to the hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

Chicago-based United said the 737-900ER plane was carrying 172 passengers and seven crew members. The plane was scheduled to resume its flight to Chicago on Wednesday afternoon.
