What happened?

The persecution took place in the village of Phulrai, where a self-proclaimed godman named Bhole Baba was holding a religious meeting.

According to officials, the event was extremely crowded.

Authorities had given permission for 80,000 people to gather, but according to the initial information report filed by police, about 250,000 people attended the event.

Chaos broke out at the end of the event as the pastor was about to leave in his car.

According to the police report, thousands of devotees rushed to his vehicle and collected dust from the path as a sign of devotion.

As the crowd swelled, several people sitting or crouching on the ground were crushed to death.

The document says some people tried to run to a muddy field across the road but were forcibly stopped and crushed by organizers.

Police have filed charges against a man they say was the main organizer of the event, and several others, on multiple charges including manslaughter.
