European lawmakers on Thursday called for the lifting of “restrictions that prevent Ukraine from using Western weapons systems against legitimate military targets in Russia,” according to a press release.
The restrictions hinder the full exercise of Ukraine’s right to self-defense and make Ukraine vulnerable to attacks against its population and infrastructure, the resolution said.
The motion was backed by 425 EU lawmakers meeting in Strasbourg, France, while 131 voted against the resolution and 63 abstained.
In the resolution, MPs also deplored the declining level of bilateral military aid from EU countries to Kiev.
Lawmakers say the declining support, combined with restrictions on the use of Western military equipment, risks undermining efforts made so far to support Ukraine in defending itself against a full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022.
The resolution also calls for the EU to maintain and expand sanctions against Russia and its allies.
