Voting in the 2024 European Parliament elections has ended after polling stations in Italy closed at 11pm (9pm GMT) on Sunday evening.
Exit polls predicted a strong result for the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) and far-right parties in both the Identity and Democracy (ID) and European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR).
Indeed, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s nationalist Brothers of Italy (FdI) party of the ECR has finished first in the country’s EU elections, securing 26-30% of the vote according to a forecast by the national public broadcaster Rai.
Turnout in the European Parliament elections is estimated at around 51%, according to initial reports, the European Union legislature said, but this is set to change now that polling stations have closed.
