Synergy has started installing the first battery units at its 500 MW/2 gigawatt hour (GWh) Collie battery energy storage system (BESS) in Western Australia (WA).

The first 80 units are part of a larger plan for 640.

The Collie BESS, WA’s largest grid-connected facility, is expected to become operational in 2025 and will be able to supply electricity to 785,000 homes for four hours.

It will complement Synergy’s existing battery systems in Kwinana.

The construction phase of the BESS will contribute to the local economy and create 500 jobs in the city of Collie.

WA Energy Minister Reece Whitby said: “Our Government continues to secure clean, reliable and affordable energy for all Western Australians.

“We know that large-scale storage is important in our state because it supports household investments in rooftop solar and will allow us to continue our phased and sensible plan to transition away from coal by 2030.

“By installing these containerized battery systems in Collie, Synergy is one step closer to securing a cleaner energy mix that can power the system when it is needed most.”

The development is part of the Western Australian government’s broader commitment to energy transition, which has already seen an investment of A$5.4 billion.

The investment aims to deliver clean, affordable and reliable energy to the state through the development of new generation, storage and transmission infrastructure.

WA Premier Roger Cook stater7s3d: “The energy transition is moving forward under our Labor Government, positioning WA’s economy for the future.

“The Collie Battery will be one of the largest in Australia and means we can provide clean, affordable and reliable energy for WA for decades to come.

“Importantly, this large battery will keep Collie at the heart of our energy system, supporting local jobs and ensuring a strong future for the city.”
