Gazans are increasingly critical of Hamas as Israel’s deadly military campaign in the Gaza Strip continues.

Public criticism of Hamas, which took full control Gaza in 2007, after rival political party Fatah was ousted, was relatively rare before the war in Gaza.

Many Gazans also cheered the events of october 7th people then took to the streets to celebrate what they saw as the humiliation of their occupier.

But while those attacks on Israel, those about 1,200 people killedHamas’ popularity in both Gaza and the West Bank has increased, but the majority of residents in both areas do not support the group, according to findings from a survey conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Research Studies.

Israel responded to the October 7 attacks with a series of sustained air strikes and a ground assault on Gaza.

According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, more than 38,000 Palestinians have been killed in the attacks and many Gazans are living in dire conditions. Public outrage appears to be growing.

The daily routine in the Gaza Strip is largely under the supervision of Yahya Sinwara former head of Hamas’s military wing who was previously imprisoned in Israel for more than two decades.

In a March questionnaire In a West Bank-based Institute for Social and Economic Progress survey that focused on Gazans’ feelings about Hamas leadership, nearly 77% of respondents said they oppose Sinwar.

“I pray every day that God punishes whoever brought us to this situation,” Gaza resident Mohammed told the Financial Times in April. “I pray every day for Sinwar’s death.”

Gaza residents told the BBC that insults against Hamas leaders in the markets had become commonplace.

In a video seen by the BBC, filmed outside a hospital filled with wounded Palestinians, a Gazan man covered in blood screams: “I’m an academic doctor. I’ve had a good life, but we have a filthy (Hamas) leadership. They’ve gotten used to our bloodshed, God curse them! They’re scum!”

“I am one of you,” he added, “but you are a cowardly people. We could have prevented this attack!”

“They should have predicted Israel’s reaction and thought about what would happen to the 2.3 million Gazans who have nowhere safe to go,” said one Gaza resident. Nassim told the FT.

“They (Hamas) should have limited themselves to military targets,” he added.
