NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is asking the alliance’s member states to make longer-term commitments to Ukraine by guaranteeing that they will at least maintain, if not increase, their current levels of support in the coming years.

Stoltenberg estimates the total value of allied aid over the past two years at 80 billion euros – an average of 40 billion euros per year. He wants them to commit for the longer term to at least maintain what dpa has learned.

In the spring, Stoltenberg proposed that allies should provide €100 billion – equivalent to €20 billion per year – through NATO over the next five years. Until now, assistance from NATO countries has been coordinated outside NATO structures.

But that proposal has met resistance, in part because some allies prefer to continue providing military assistance outside NATO. Another is that commitments made through NATO could be more binding.
