German train passengers are facing long delays after a major IT outage caused significant disruptions to train services in central Germany, carrier Deutsche Bahn said on Saturday.

The company reports on its website that technicians are doing everything they can to resolve the problem.

According to the regional carrier DB Regio, all regional and S-Bahn traffic in the Rhine-Main area is affected by the cyber problems.

A railway spokesperson said trains in the affected area were waiting at stations due to the disruption and that urgent work was being done to resolve the issue.

Further details were not initially available.

The latest delays come after growing criticism of the railway company, which has been caused by major delays and problems during the European football tournament earlier this summer, prompting calls for the director and board to resign.
