Germany’s The world’s busiest airport suspended all flights on Thursday after climate activists clung to the tarmac in protest against the use of fossil fuels.

At 07:00 local time (01:00 eastern time), the Frankfurt airport website reported that several flights had been diverted or cancelled. Several flights were also cancelled.

The airport, which is served by almost 60 million travelers advised passengers last year not to travel to the facility “for the time being”.

“Due to an ongoing demonstration at the airport, flights are currently suspended,” the airport said in a message on X, adding that passengers should allow for additional travel time.

Climate activist group Latest generationor “Last Generation,” posted videos and photos on X that appeared to show its members at the airport.

“Airports are places where it becomes clear that what used to be normal, we can no longer afford today. Gas and coal threaten our existence,” said Letzte Generation on X.

CNN has contacted Frankfurt police.

The protests in Frankfurt came a day after climate activists held a series of demonstrations at airports across Europe.
