The European Commission announced on Wednesday that Dutch and French support measures worth a total of €10.4 billion for Air France-KLM have been approved.

The Commission initially approved the aid in May and July 2020 under the Temporary Covid Framework for State aid, but the General Court annulled it in December 2023 and February 2024, noting that “the Commission wrongly considered that Air France and KLM were the sole beneficiaries of the French and Dutch State aid measures respectively”.

“In the present decision, the Commission has reassessed the measures, with the Air France-KLM Group being the beneficiary of both the French and Dutch measures, and has concluded that they are also compatible with the temporary Covid framework or directly with the Treaty,” the Commission said.

Air France-KLM welcomes the new decision, but notes that the decision has no impact on the appeals brought by the European Commission, Air France, KLM and Air France-KLM against the rulings of the General Court of the EU.

“The Court of Justice of the European Union has yet to rule on these appeals,” the company said.
