The leader of the German conservative party CSU in the state of Bavaria, Markus Söder, is calling for early national parliamentary elections as soon as possible, after the mishandling of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-left coalition in the European elections.
“This government is basically ready. And it must now be like France: new elections have been asked, there are new elections by Macron,” Söder, who is also the state premier of Bavaria, told broadcaster n-tv on Monday morning.
“Our country needs a new start,” he said. “That is why new elections must be held as soon as possible.”
French President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly after his party’s resounding defeat by the far right on Sunday evening.
There will be elections in two rounds on June 30 and July 7 before the start of the Olympic Games in Paris.
