At least 4 dead, over 90 injured as Typhoon Shanshan wreaks havoc in Japan

Japan is bracing for continued risks of landslides and flooding as Tropical Cyclone Shanshan, now downgraded to a tropical depression, slowly moves inland after three days of record rainfall. Shanshan, which landed on Thursday as the strongest typhoon of the year, causing significant disruption in southwestern Japan, leading to at least four dead and more than 90 injured.

  • The Destruction of Shanshan: In Aichi Prefecture, three people died in a landslide triggered by heavy rain, while an elderly man in Tokushima Prefecture died when the roof of his house collapsed. The storm has caused widespread flooding, tornadoes in Miyazaki Prefecture, power outages affecting more than 48,000 households and evacuation orders for more than 4 million people.

  • What is being done: Travel has been hit hard, with suspensions on major rail lines including the Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Osaka. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled by major airlines and many travellers have been left stranded, with “train hotels” set up at major stations to accommodate them. Forecasters are expecting several more days of rain, with some regions potentially seeing up to 15 inches of rain. Officials are warn people to protect themselves from landslides, strong winds, rivers bursting their banks and storm surges as Shanshan continues to batter Japan. Damage is estimated at $6 billion to $10 billion.
