KYIV (Reuters) – A Russian missile attack on Ukraine’s central city of Dnipro injured eight people, including two children, and damaged civilian infrastructure early on Tuesday, Ukrainian authorities said.

Ukraine’s air force said it had shot down two Iskander-K cruise missiles over the region. According to Serhiy Lysak, the regional governor, the rocket debris damaged civilian infrastructure, caused fires and injured residents.

The injured included a one-month-old boy and a 17-year-old, in addition to six adults, based on preliminary information from the governor and state emergency services.

The attack damaged cars and broke windows in residential buildings and a hospital, Lysak wrote on the messaging app Telegram. Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov added that at least 47 homes and a school had been damaged.

Emergency services extinguished the fire caused by the attack on Tuesday morning.

Russian forces also launched four drones during the nighttime attack. Ukraine’s air force said it shot down two of them over the northern Chernihiv region.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly emphasized the urgent need for air defense systems as Russia has bombarded the country with air strikes on critical infrastructure this spring.
