At least 19 people have drowned after their boat sank in the Amhara region, according to reports from northern Ethiopia.

The ship was carrying passengers on the Tekezé River, which runs along Ethiopia’s border with Eritrea.

There were reportedly 26 people on board when the accident happened on Saturday.

The survivors were taken to hospital for treatment, reports the Amhara Media Corporation (AMC)including a ‘seriously injured’ child.

It was not yet clear on Sunday whether all the bodies of the deceased had been recovered from the water.

Work on a disused bridge over the Tekeze River was supposed to be completed last month but has been delayed, a local official told AMC.

Authorities are severely restricting media access to northern Ethiopia.

The region has seen recent fighting between the army and an ethnic Amhara militia known as the Fano.
