German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck is relieved about the outcome of the parliamentary elections in France, in which the far right failed to achieve a breakthrough and a left-wing coalition unexpectedly emerged as the winner.

Habeck said France now faces the daunting challenge of forming a government — especially since no political camp has won the 289 seats needed to secure an outright majority in the National Assembly — but that it is heartening to see centrist and left-wing parties working together to prevent France from becoming too nationalistic.

During a visit to Stuttgart on Monday, the Green politician called it an “encouraging election result”.
