WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A number of local organizations helped kick off Latin American Heritage Month, which starts Sunday, and celebrated Mexican Independence Day, which falls on Monday.

The organizations came together to share their culture with the community they now call home.

This is what the fourth year of the Latin Cultural Festival looks like: a mix of all kinds of people who all have one goal: to have a good time. 102.3 La Mega was the host of this festival.

“There’s more food this year. In previous years it was mostly music, a little bit of food and some other stuff. This year we have a lot of different types of food and you know, we also have things for the kids in the kids zone, so it’s slowly growing every year,” said Jill Wydra, coordinator of the Latin Cultural Festival Event.

Elizebath Perez says it’s important to organize these types of events in the community.

“We need to celebrate. We need to show ourselves. We need to put our food and our culture out there so people can get to know us,” Perez explained.

According to Perez, it is important for the Spanish-speaking community to represent itself in the community, because this community is growing.

“You know, there are a lot of Spanish people in the community, so we try to bring events, festivals and our culture here,” Perez continued.

According to one of the organizers of this event, this is a great way to get to know Spanish culture.

“Today is a special day for the Hispanic community of Wilkes-Barre. We’re showcasing our culture, our food, our drinks,” said Latin Cultural Festival organizer Jonathan Alcantara.
