YORK, Pa. (WHTM) — York Mayor Michael Helfrich will travel to the city’s “sister city” in France next month.
According to sistercities.orga sister city, state, or county relationship is “a broad, long-term partnership between two communities in two countries. A relationship is officially recognized after the highest elected or appointed official of both communities signs an agreement to become sister cities.”

Helfrich has a trip planned to York’s sister city, Arles, France. Asked if sister city agreements are strictly symbolic, Hefrich said, “Absolutely not.”
“We have students every year that come here, that go there. And we get to know each other,” Helfrich said. “That builds relationships that then build business and the economy, so it’s much more than just a handshake.”
York and Arles became sister cities in 1954.
