Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Friday claimed responsibility for a drone strike on a “key target” in Tel Aviv, in what the Iran-aligned militias said was retaliation for Israeli military action in the Gaza Strip.
Houthis military spokesman Yehya Saree said the operation was carried out with a new drone called Yafa, which can evade Israeli interception and radar systems.
In a televised statement, he claimed that his militia has a “number of targets” in Israel and that Tel Aviv is in its sights.
Earlier on Friday, Israel’s Magen David Adom rescue service reported that one person had been killed and eight people injured in a loud explosion near a US embassy branch in Tel Aviv.
The cause of the explosion was initially unclear. However, unconfirmed media reports suggested that the explosion could have been the result of a drone strike.
Houthi militants have also been attacking ships in the Red Sea for months.
They say they want an end to Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip, which followed the unprecedented slaughter by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in Israel last October.
