A victory for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the elections in the state of Brandenburg would be a “clear sign of hope”, according to the AfD leadership candidate in the eastern state.

If the AfD gains more support, “things will go better in Germany,” said Hans-Christoph Berndt as he cast his vote in the Golssen constituency south of Berlin.

“We are stronger than in 2019,” Berndt said. The future of Brandenburg would not be decided in one election, but in the coming years, he added.

Support for the AfD increased and that gave him confidence, Berndt said.
