CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s Supreme Court has upheld President Nicolas Maduro’s claims that he won last month’s election, saying that vote results posted online that showed he lost by an overwhelming margin were falsified.

The Supreme Court is filled with Maduro supporters and has almost never ruled against the government.

Thursday’s ruling came in response to a request by Maduro to review the results of the July 28 election. The opposition had published online voting results from 80% of polling stations, showing opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez winning by a margin of more than 2 to 1.

Gonzalez did not participate in the audit, a fact also noted by the judges who accused him of trying to sow panic.
