The UN Supreme Court has ruled in a landmark judgment that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories violates international law.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ruled that Israel must halt settlement construction in the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza and end its “illegal” occupation of those territories as soon as possible.
The court’s advisory opinion is not legally binding, but still carries considerable political weight. It is the first time the ICJ has taken a position on the legality of the 57-year occupation.
The ICJ, based in The Hague, Netherlands, has been investigating the matter since early last year, at the request of the UN General Assembly.
The court was specifically asked to give its opinion on Israeli policies and practices towards the Palestinians and on the legal status of the occupation.
