The terrorist group Al-Shabaab reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place late on Friday night (local time) and involved a suicide bombing followed by a gun battle between militants and security forces.
According to media reports, at least 37 people have been killed and more than 200 injured, some of whom are in serious condition.
“The Secretary General is saddened that the people of Somalia continue to be victims of such horrific acts of terror“, said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN chief, in a rack on Saturday.
He repeats that The United Nations stands firmly with the government and people of Somalia against terrorism and violent extremismadded Mr Haq.
The UN team in Somalia also condemned the attack.
“Lido Beach is a popular place for Somalis to spend time with family and friends and enjoy the beauty of the Somali coastline. Targeting this location is a heinous act that deserves the strongest condemnation“, James Swan, Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, said in a press release.
“As we join all peace-loving Somalis in mourning this sad loss, I reaffirm the support and solidarity of the United Nations with the Federal Government of Somalia in its efforts to ensure peace, security and stability in the country,” he added.
Friday night’s attack was one of the deadliest in the country since the Mogadishu bombings in October 2022 in which more than 120 people were killed and more than 300 injured.
