Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksii Makeiev, has called on the government not to let up on its support for Ukraine, a German newspaper reported on Sunday.
Makeiev stressed in the newspaper Bild am Sonntag that Europe’s security depends on Germany’s ability and political will to continue to play a leading role in supporting Ukraine.
He expressed the hope that the government would find ways to finance shared security needs and that parliament, the Bundestag, would speak out strongly and clearly on the 2025 budget.
His comments follow another newspaper report stating that the German government does not want to release additional money for military aid to Ukraine for the time being.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (FAS) report quotes a letter from Finance Minister Christian Lindner dated August 5.
The letter, also seen by dpa, shows that future support for Ukraine could come from interest on frozen Russian state assets, as decided by the Group of Seven (G7), the leading industrialised countries.
On Saturday, a spokesman for the Finance Ministry said the ministry was prepared to consider the short-term provision of additional funds. He said that the additional needs would have to be reported concretely and comprehensibly in order to comply with all budgetary regulations, and that the Bundestag would be asked for approval on this basis.
So far, no specific request has been submitted to the Finance Ministry, meaning it cannot be investigated or decided, he said, handing responsibility to the Defense Ministry.
