President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine hopes the billions of dollars earmarked for the war effort will actually be realized.
Part of the funds in question will be financed from the proceeds of frozen Russian state assets.
There have been many political statements from Kiev’s partners and many more are expected, Zelensky said in his evening video address on Wednesday. “But we need a real mechanism,” he insisted.
Ukraine needs the proceeds from the frozen Russian assets for its defense against Russia, the aggressor in the armed conflict that has been going on for more than two years.
“The discussions on this have been going on for far too long and decisions must finally be made now,” Zelensky said.
The seven major Western industrialized nations (G7) agreed at their June summit to provide financial support to Kiev. A generous loan totaling $50 billion is to be covered by interest income from frozen Russian assets.
