Ukraine launched an attack on Moscow on Wednesday, in what Russia called one of the largest drone attacks in the war. However, Russia claimed that all the explosive unmanned vehicles had been shot down.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that its forces destroyed a total of 45 drones fired at Russia overnight from Wednesday to Wednesday.
According to Russia, 11 of these drones were knocked out by air defenses over the Moscow region, and three of them around the neighboring Kaluga Oblast.
The rest were shot down by anti-aircraft fire in regions bordering Ukraine, including Kursk, where Ukraine is engaged in a major offensive that began on August 6.
Ukraine has previously attacked Moscow with long-range drones, and Russia has accused Ukraine of being behind an attack on the Kremlin last year that came as part of a Ukrainian campaign to harm Russia’s war effort.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a Telegram post that Wednesday’s operation was “one of the largest ever attempts to attack Moscow with drones.”
Ukrainian officials have not publicly commented on the drone strike and have generally refrained from reporting on attacks on Russian territory.
Ukraine’s armed forces reported on Wednesday that Russia has carried out a wave of drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian territory, which have subsequently been shot down.
The attack around Moscow comes as Ukraine advances toward Kursk, capturing nearly 1,300 square kilometers of territory and more than 90 settlements in the Russian region.
Russia is also making advances in eastern Ukraine, putting pressure on the cities of Toretsk and Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region.
