(KRON) – A demonstration against the war in Gaza took place at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, two people were arrested and one police officer was injured, police said.

Palo Alto Police Department officers were monitoring the anti-war demonstration at 6 p.m. Monday when they noticed a woman using spray paint to scribble text on the windows of an Apple Store. PAPD identified that woman as 26-year-old Fatima Yahyaa of Berkeley.

“When officers attempted to detain (Yahyaa), she ran from the officers and tried to enter
the passenger seat of a waiting vehicle, occupied by a male driver. As one officer tried
to remove the struggling female suspect, the male driver, from the open door of the vehicle
abruptly pulled away from the curb, slammed the officer’s hand in the door and slammed him into his body
the ground and ran over his foot. The vehicle was able to elude arrest at that time,” police wrote.

The officer suffered minor hand and foot wounds and was treated at a hospital.

Later that evening, Yahyaa was found and arrested in Berkeley. She was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose for vandalism, conspiracy and resisting arrest with violence.

Detectives said they identified the getaway driver as 25-year-old True Brading of Berkeley.

Detectives arrested Brading Thursday evening in El Sobrante. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy.

“During the same demonstration, a counter-protester reported that his Israeli flag had been taken from him. The victim, a man in his 50s, reported that he did not know which of the protesters had taken him. The flag is down and the suspect has still not been identified,” police wrote.

PAPD said it is investigating the flag-stealing incident as a hate crime. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 650-329-2413. Anonymous tips can be emailed to paloalto@tipnow.org.
