Things weren’t looking too good for Fiat in July, but now that the UNRAE data for August has been released, the number one brand in Italy has long since been beaten. And not just by that one competitor.

With only 4,756 passenger car registrations, Fiat was not only surpassed by Toyota (5,941), which was still lurking in July, but also by Volkswagen (5,148) and Dacia (4,941).

There is some consolation for the Italian brand, as it comfortably retains its number one status for the year so far, with 110,595 sales in the first eight months, while Toyota lags behind in second place with 82,148. Nevertheless, this is a serious situation for Fiat, as it has never been in such a position before. The brand is doing exceptionally well in other major markets, however, with sales in both Turkey and Brazil far outpacing those in Italy.

Despite its age, the Panda is by far the best-selling model on the Italian market to date, well ahead of the fast-growing Sandero and Yaris Cross. There is also a group of other small vehicles that have enjoyed similar success. These include the Lancia Ypsilon, Jeep Avenger, Renault Clio and Citroën C3.
