TotalEnergies charters a new LNG bunker vessel and expands its global bunker network

TotalEnergies has announced the expansion of its global LNG bunkering network with the signing of a charter contract for a new LNG bunkering vessel with a capacity of 18,600 m³.

The vessel is owned by Spanish company Ibaizabal and will strengthen the French oil and gas company’s presence in key bunkering hubs.

This includes Oman, where it is developing the Marsa LNG project to meet the LNG demand of the Gulf shipping sector.

The new ship, which will be built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China, is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026.

It will join TotalEnergies’ existing fleet of LNG bunkering vessels, including the Throttle agility in the port of Rotterdam, the Gas vitality in the port of Marseille and the Brassavola at the port of Singapore.

This expansion is in line with the company’s goal to provide cleaner fuel alternatives for various types of maritime vessels, from container ships to large cruise ships.

LNG is considered a readily available transition fuel for the maritime industry, delivering a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

It also improves air quality by reducing nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 85% and virtually eliminating sulfur oxides and particulate matter.

TotalEnergies senior vice president of aviation and marine fuels Louise Tricoire said: “We are very proud of this agreement with Ibaizabal, which strengthens our position as a major player in the LNG bunkering field.

“With new LNG-powered ships rapidly entering service, we want to play our part in responding to the industry’s increasing demand for this fuel, which can help global shipping meet its decarbonization ambitions achieve.”

Earlier this week, Italian oil and gas company Eni said steps have also been taken in the LNG bunker market by signing a multi-year charter agreement with Avenir LNG for the Avenir aspirationa 7,500 m³ LNG bunker ship.

This vessel will support the maritime industry’s transition to LNG, in line with Eni’s sustainability goals and the broader goal of decarbonizing the maritime sector by 2050.
