BEIJING (AP) — A tornado ripped through China’s eastern Shandong province on Friday, killing one person and injuring dozens of others, officials said.

According to authorities, 79 people were taken to hospitals in the Dongming area with various injuries.

The tornado ripped through the city, uprooting trees and tearing off store signs, according to videos on state media, sending large amounts of debris into the air.

Officials are assessing the extent of the damage, state media reported.

The China Meteorological Service issued a tornado warning for parts of Shandong and neighboring Jiangsu province on Friday.

According to China Weather News, which is maintained by the China Meteorological Service, tornadoes are mostly recorded in southern provinces and coastal provinces such as Guangdong and Jiangsu.
