According to international media, the coordinated attacks targeted the militant group Hezbollah, with hundreds of electronic beepers belonging to the group’s members exploding simultaneously.
‘Extremely worrying escalation’
“Today’s developments mark an extremely worrying escalation in an already unacceptably volatile context.”, said Mrs. Hennis-Plasschaert a statement.
In accordance with international law, she reminded all ‘concerned actors that civilians are not targets and must be protected at all timesstressing that “even one civilian death is one too many.”
While the full impact of the attack is still being felt, she urged all involved to “refrain from further action or belligerent rhetoric, which could ignite a bigger conflagration that no one can afford.”
The Special Coordinator concluded her statement by stressing the urgency of restoring calm and called on all parties involved to consider stability as the highest priority, as “the stakes are too high to do anything less.”
