As river levels in Poland fall again, the country’s authorities are taking stock of the casualties and damage caused by the devastating floods.
Nine bodies have been found so far, police chief Marek Boron said after a cabinet meeting in Warsaw. He said this increased the number of confirmed fatalities by two. In addition, one person is still missing.
The identities of the two most recently found bodies have not yet been clearly determined, Boron said.
In the areas most threatened by flooding, residents are still at risk from its effects, Boron warned.
In the past 24 hours, he said, another 20 people have been evacuated from their homes due to the risk of collapse. A total of 4,778 people had to leave their homes at least temporarily due to the floods.
According to news agency PAP, the government has so far released 623 million zloty ($163 million) in flood aid for those affected.
Thanks to the deployment of police and army helicopters, “199 lives” were saved from immediate danger, Boron said. In addition, psychologists have been sent to help those affected on site.
The floods temporarily blocked 89 roads. According to Boron, police have also documented 22 cases of looting and other crimes, exploiting the fate of many people. These include fake fundraisers for alleged victims.
