The deputy was not present to testify on Thursday afternoon because he is unwell and in hospital, Gachagua’s lawyer Paul Muite said in proceedings broadcast on state television in the capital Nairobi.
Gachagua was set to testify after lawmakers brought in 11 charges, including stealing government funds and stoking ethnic hatred against him. He has pleaded not guilty on all counts and called the trial a witch hunt.
The Senate will resume its hearing at 5pm in Nairobi.
