The European Commission (EC) has given the green light to a €1.2 billion Polish plan aimed at boosting investments in electricity storage facilities.

The initiative aims to support the installation of at least 5.4 GW of new electricity storage capacity.

The scheme, which was approved under the Temporary State Aid Crisis and Transition Framework (TCTF), is in line with the Commission’s objectives, as set out on March 9, 2023, and subsequently amended on November 20, 2023 and May 2, 2024.

The Polish government has informed the committee of its intention to use the TCTF for this purpose.

Funding for the plan will come from a combination of the Modernization Fund and the Recovery and Resilience Facility, following the European Commission’s positive assessment of Poland’s Recovery and Resilience Plan and its formal adoption by the European Council.

The primary goal of the plan is to minimize the Polish electricity system’s dependence on fossil fuels and improve the integration of variable renewable energy sources into the national electricity grid.

This will be achieved by supporting the construction of new electricity storage facilities.

The right to support under this scheme is limited to newly installed storage facilities with a minimum capacity of 4 MW.

These facilities must be connected to the distribution or transmission network at all voltage levels to ensure a broad impact on the Polish electricity system.

The selection of projects for the scheme will be carried out by Poland through a competitive call for proposals.

Margrethe Vestager, executive vice-president of competition policy, said: “This €1.2 billion plan will allow Poland to deploy additional electricity storage capacity.

“By facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources into the electricity system, the plan will make Poland’s energy mix greener and reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports from Russia, in line with the EU’s climate and energy goals, while reducing possible competitive distortions be kept to a minimum. .”

In August this year, the EC awarded 998 million euros to a Dutch initiative encouraging green hydrogen production.
