The Brandenburg Gate is illuminated with the colors of the Israeli flag to mark the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel with rocket fire and ground infiltrations from Gaza, resulting in heavy casualties and the capture of numerous hostages. In response, Israel declared war on the Palestinian enclave, which has escalated into a full-scale war that has sparked a wave of unrest across the Middle East. Kay Nietfeld/dpa

The city of Berlin on Monday illuminated the iconic Brandenburg Gate with a projection of the Israeli flag to mark the anniversary of the attack on Israel led by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

“Berlin is sending a signal to the world that we stand with Israel, that together with the families of the hostages we hope that humanity and compassion will always be stronger than hatred,” said Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner.

“Berlin is the city of freedom,” added the mayor of the German capital.

The monument was also illuminated with the words “Bring them home now,” a slogan used to demand the release of Israeli hostages kidnapped and held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip during the October 7, 2023 attack.

A year earlier, on the day of the attack, the Brandenburg Gate was also illuminated with the colors of the Israeli flag.
