Shocking footage shows a group of hikers running for their lives during a volcanic eruption in Indonesia. They had just reached the edge of Mount Dukono when smoke began billowing towards them.

Government drones captured the terrifying incident on camera earlier this month. The dozen or so hikers can be seen scrambling down the steep slopes of Mount Dukano as huge plumes of gray smoke and ash billow from the crater’s roof and roll down the slopes.

The group can be seen scrambling down the sides at warp speed and then running for their lives. It looked like the ash cloud was going to engulf them. Some of the group stood on the edge of the lookout, watching before slowly moving down. Incredibly, everyone managed to escape and make it to safety. No injuries were reported.

Indonesia is located right in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region in the Pacific Ocean with 450 active volcanoes. The island of Halmahera is home to two of them: Mount Ibu and Mount Dukano.

There are strict guidelines for visiting the volcanoes because of how active and unpredictable they are. Dukano has been erupting continuously since the 1930s. Currently, the crater is on Level II alert, meaning hikers are not allowed within two miles of the crater. This hiking group has chosen to ignore that ban.
