Tens of thousands of people took part in a mass demonstration in Tel Aviv on Sunday night to call for a ceasefire in the war in Gaza, after the Israeli military announced it had recovered the bodies of six hostages in the Gaza Strip.

Many demonstrators carried Israeli flags and six coffins were placed on a stage in memory of the fallen hostages.

Protesters also blocked a main road in Tel Aviv, while people took to the streets in other Israeli cities.

The protesters called on the government to quickly agree to a ceasefire and secure the release of the remaining 101 hostages from Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

Indirect ceasefire negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian extremist group Hamas, brokered by Egypt, the US and Qatar, have been stalled for months.

Israel’s Histadrut labor union has called for a general strike on Monday to increase pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and secure a hostage deal.
