Taiwan’s president says China can never be Taiwan’s ‘motherland’

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te claimed on Saturday that it is “absolutely impossible” for communist China to be Taiwan’s motherland, citing the island’s government as a parent. Lai, who took office in May, made the comment during a national holiday at the Taipei Dome ahead of Taiwan’s National Day on Thursday.

He reaffirmed this position on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China last week, declaring that reunification is an “irreversible trend.” Meanwhile, Lai’s comments have done just that faced criticism of the opposition Kuomintang party (KMT), a political group that advocates closer ties with Beijing. KMT councilor Ling Tao criticized Lai for “inciting political confrontation” by emphasizing the “motherland theory”.
