Westinghouse Electric has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Seaspan for the production of key components for the AP1000 and AP300 small modular reactors (SMRs).

The MoU will support new nuclear construction projects in Canada and around the world, and includes the production of components such as pipe spools and steel structures.

Seaspan Shipyards strategy, business development and communications senior vice president Dave Hargreaves said: “Seaspan’s proven experience in custom, high-quality manufacturing and production in support of both our large shipbuilding and complex repair and overhaul projects has positioned Seaspan to continue work in adjacent markets, such as the nuclear industry.”

For every AP1000 unit built outside Canada, Westinghouse could contribute nearly C$1 billion ($726 million) in Canadian dollars to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) through local suppliers.

The agreement strengthens Westinghouse’s commitment to the Canadian economy and the development of the country’s nuclear supply chain.

Westinghouse noted that its AP1000 reactor, the only Generation III+ reactor currently in operation, is at the forefront of the company’s collaboration with Canadian suppliers.

Currently, six AP1000 reactors are operational worldwide, with eight more under construction.

It is expected that 18 units based on AP1000 technology will be in use worldwide by 2030.

In addition to the AP1000, Westinghouse is working with the Canadian supply chain on the AP300 SMR, a 300 MW single-loop pressurized water reactor, and the eVinci microreactor.

Dan Lipman, president of Westinghouse Energy Systems, said: “We are proud to establish this new relationship with Seaspan and bring them into our network of more than 450 Canadian suppliers.

“Seaspan’s manufacturing expertise and ability to deliver large-scale projects will make it a valuable partner in supporting advanced reactor projects in Canada and abroad.”

In September 2024 Westinghouse Electric collaborated with Hyundai Engineering & Construction will investigate the possibilities of nuclear power plants in Sweden and Finland.
