Everest energya Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessel is en route to an unfinished gas facility in northern Russia to pick up the fourth shipment of LNG to be loaded from the terminal.
The vessel was placed under sanctions earlier this year and the entire Arctic LNG 2 facility was reportedly placed under US sanctions last year.
Several media outlets are reporting that Novatek’s relocation of the vessel and dumping of gas on a floating production, storage and offloading facility (FPSO) are an attempt to circumvent sanctions.
The Arctic LNG 2 project is 60% owned by Novatek and will eventually become Russia’s largest LNG plant.
The broad US sanctions in Russia has apparently scared off many buyers who were considering making a purchase from the facility.
The project’s expansion has been postponed until 2028 as sanctions remain strict.
Russia has had a so-called ‘shadow fleet‘ of oil and gas ships to transport and sell hydrocarbons, even while sanctions are in place.
On Thursday, the US imposed further sanctions on two companies involved in Russia’s new LNG project. Gotik Energy Shipping and Plio Energy Cargo Shipping are now restricted.
“Sanctioned Russian tanker heading to new LNG facility to pick up cargo” was originally created and published by Offshore technologya brand of GlobalData.
