Russian job websites are advertising positions for trench diggers in Kursk province as Russia rushes to shore up its defences.
According to job advertisements, first reported by the BCC, the messages call for “general workers” who can dig in reinforcements in theThe border area of Kursk.
The positions provide a monthly salary of 150,000 to 371,000 rubles (approximately $1,600 to $4,000).
It comes after Ukraine launched a daring cross-border attack on Kursk last week, catching the Russian military by surprise and saying it has now entered 390 square miles of Russian territory.
According to experts, The Russian response to the attack is hampered by unclear command structures and inexperienced troops.
But Ukraine is sending additional troops to the region and building fortifications to stop further Ukrainian advances.
The Kremlin has declared a state of emergency and evacuated 132,000 people from Kursk and neighboring Belgorod.
The Institute for the Study of War, A US think tank reported on Wednesday that satellite images showed Russia digging fortifications, “including trenches and anti-vehicle defenses,” about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Ukraine’s most advanced positions in Kursk.
“Russian forces appear to be particularly concerned about major highways and are likely attempting to preemptively secure key ground communications lines (GLOCs) to impede Ukrainian maneuvers,” the report said.
Analysts say Ukraine’s likely goal with the invasion was to divert Russian troops from Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, where heavy fighting is taking place.
The country could also try to use the Russian territory it has seized as a bargaining chip in future peace negotiations with Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia must “drive out” the invaders in a televised meeting with senior officials on Tuesday.
